This is the oldest Catholic church in the Gyeongsangbuk-do area. It was established in 1895 by Camille Pailhasse (1868-1903) of France, who was the first priest of this church. Priest Pailhasse chose this location for the church, as it was close to a ferry dock of the Nakdonggang River and provided convenient access to nearby regions for propagation. As the number of followers grew, the current church building was newly built in 1923 by Priest Victor Tourneux (1879-1944) based on a design by Victor Louis Poisnel (1855-1925), the priest who had overseen the interior work of Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul and Jeondong Catholic Church in Jeonju.
