For more than 100 years, the Eiserner Steg or ‘Iron Bridge’ has spanned the Main to bring pedestrians from “Hibb de Bach to Dribb de Bach”, i.e. from the old town over to Sachsenhausen. The steel structure, which inspired the expressionist painters Max Beckmann (1884-1950) and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) to create several paintings, was destroyed in World War II, but was rebuilt shortly afterwards.
During a later renovation, elevators for wheelchairs and strollers were installed. Anyone who goes on the bridge has a great view of the striking silhouette of the city and the Museumsufer. On the old town side is the pier for Frankfurt excursion boats, which travel upriver towards Gerbermühle or downstream towards Griesheim lock. Alternatively, visitors can rent electric boats on the Sachsenhäuser Ufer or stop off at the restaurant ship.
